On Friday, July 1st, 2022, members of the Niagara Regional Police attended the Cities of Port Colborne and St. Catharines to conduct R.I.D.E. checkpoints.

Officers stopped approximately 600 vehicles throughout the early evening and into the morning.  Of the vehicles stopped, a total of 1 driver was administered a roadside screening test.  This driver provided a sample in the warning range and subsequently, had their drivers licence suspended for three days.

In addition to the roadside suspension, several drivers were also charged with various traffic related offences. These infractions included:

  • A novice driver with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) above zero
  • An adult driver that had passengers under the age of 16 without seatbelts
  • Unauthorized use of licence plates

The Niagara Regional Police Service remains committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like R.I.D.E. Impaired driving is still the leading criminal offence causing deaths in Canada.

This initiative has been made possible, in part, as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) program.
