The 2 District Street Crime Unit has arrested a Niagara Falls man for a break and enter to the Niagara on the Lake Bass Pro Store that occurred on March 24, 2020.

On March 24, 2 District – Niagara Falls / Niagara on the Lake uniform officers responded to the Bass Pros Shop at 300 Taylor Road in Niagara on the Lake for a report of a break and enter.  The investigation learned that during the evening of March 23, 2020, a suspect attended the Bass Pro Shop and smashed a glass window out of a garage door.  The suspect left in a Ford pickup truck. The suspect did not enter the store.

The suspect returned in the early morning hours of March 24th, 2020, and forced his way into the store.  While in the store the suspect stole five firearms and other merchandise.  The suspect left the scene in the same Ford pickup truck.

The investigation revealed the Ford truck had been stolen from a Ford dealership in Toronto while it was awaiting service.

Detectives from the 2 District Street Crime Unit took over the investigation. 

On Tuesday March 24th, 2020, at approximately 9:20am officers located the stolen Ford F150 at a residence on Dixon Street near Drummond Road in Niagara Falls.  Officers subsequently arrested a man who lived in the home and seized the Ford.

Detectives applied for and were granted a search warrant for the home.  The subsequent search of the home recovered the five stolen firearms and the other stolen merchandise from Bass Pro.

Detectives also discovered property believed to be stolen from a commercial break and enter to a Niagara Falls chiropractor's office that occurred on March 17, 2020.

Jason Persaud (27 years old) of Niagara Falls has been arrested and charged with the alleged Criminal Code of Canada offences of:

  • Break Enter and steal firearm, sec. 98(1)(b)  
  • Break Enter and commit (non-dwelling), sec. 348(1)(b) (2 Counts)
  • Possession of Stolen Property Over $5000, sec. 355(a) (2 Counts)
  • Possession of Stolen Property Under $5000, sec. 355(b) 
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm, 91(1) ( 5 counts)
  • Possession of Firearm Obtained by Crime, sec. 96(1) (5 Counts)
  • Fail to comply with a Recognizance, sec. 145(3)CC

The 17 charges are inclusive of the Bass Pro Shop, the chiropractor's office and the stolen Ford.

Persaud was held in custody to appear at a bail hearing via video link to the Robert S. K. Welch court house in St. Catharines on March 25, 2020.
