Crime Prevention

Crime Prevention is a commitment to reducing and preventing crime. The Niagara Regional Police Service is focused on preventing crime before it happens which is possible through enforcement, education and community engagement.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED - pronounced sep-ted) is a practical approach to reducing crime by improving how spaces are designed and used.

The idea is simple: when buildings, landscaping, and public spaces are planned thoughtfully, they can help reduce both crime and the fear of crime, while also improving overall quality of life. CPTED focuses on how a space looks, how it functions, and how people behave in it to remove opportunities for crime before they happen.

Much of CPTED is simply smart, common-sense design.
