Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion | Niagara Regional Police Service

Our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Unit is comprised of both sworn and civilian members who are committed to ensuring that the Niagara Regional Police Service is providing education and tools to both our members and the general public on the importance of promoting inclusivity within the police service and the Niagara Region.

This is accomplished through voluntary, as well as mandatory internal educational opportunities for our members, community outreach and events, as well as crime prevention and community safety initiatives throughout the Niagara Region.

Engagement Opportunities

Presentations and Learning Events

The EDI Unit can attend newcomer centres, ESL classrooms, workplaces, seniors’ centres, long-term care homes, schools and community organizations to deliver educational presentations on various topics, including:

· Fraud & scam prevention

· Identifying hate crimes & incidents

· Employment rights

· Renter’s rights

· Understanding domestic violence

· Social media and online safety

Post-Secondary School Engagement Opportunities

The EDI Unit can attend events and learning opportunities at post-secondary schools, including:

· Service fairs

· Student orientation events

· Classroom presentations

· ESL and adult learning presentations

Elementary and Secondary School Engagement Opportunities

Positive and proactive engagement from law enforcement professionals can leave lasting impressions on youth. The EDI Unit offers various opportunities for students to interact with police officers in a safe and welcoming way. Examples include:

· Nutrition program visits

· Participation in school fairs & assemblies

· Classroom presentations & workshops (topics can be tailored to specific lesson)

· Touch-a-Truck events with police vehicle

Festivals and Special Events

Invite the EDI Unit to your special event! Table setups at festivals and attendance at special events is an important way to bridge communication between the NRPS and diverse communities across Niagara. We are happy to attend a wide range of events, including:

· Religious events

· Fundraising events

Translation/Interpreter Services Available

Deaf/Hard of Hearing Communication Placards:

We've designed these placards for individuals who are deaf/hard of hearing to carry with them and use to communicate with our officers, should they ever need to. Available to download or pick up at any of the front desks of our Districts.

Canadian Hearing Services: support for deaf and hard of hearing Canadians

If you require access to any of the interpretation/translation services listed, please let us know. This service is provided at no cost to you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Some exceptions do apply for video ASL services.
