Update 8:34 am

At approximately 7:30am, the male was taken into police custody.

The shelter in place as well as road closures have been lifted with no ongoing risk to public safety.

No further injuries reported.

The male suspect remains contained in the residence.

If members of the public are questioning recent sounds heard in the area, Police have initiated tactics and equipment to determine the wellbeing of the male inside the home.

Negotiations continue as officers work towards a peaceful surrender.

The officer who was injured this morning has been treated and released from hospital with minor physical injuries.

For residents who have been displaced or unable to return to their homes, a shelter has been established at the City of Welland Community Centre at 145 Lincoln Street in Welland.

Residents will need to provide proof of address.

Officers along with Emergency Task Unit members remain at the scene with negotiators working towards a peaceful surrender.

Staff have been evacuated from Plymouth Public School and St. Mary Catholic Elementary School.

The hold and secure has also been lifted at Welland Hospital.

This remains an active police investigation with the male suspect contained.

At this time, the hold and secure has been lifted at the Welland Hospital, however access is restricted due to road closures in the area.

We are currently on scene in Welland responding to a shooting incident. Officers are actively working to make the area safe. A shelter-in-place order has been issued, and schools in the area, as well as the local hospital, are currently in lockdown.

For media attending the area, a designated media staging point has been established at the City of Welland Community Centre, 145 Lincoln Street, Welland.

As firearms were discharged by officers during the initial interaction, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been notified and they have invoked their mandate.

As police responded to the area this morning, one officer was shot and struck by gunfire.

The officer has been transported to hospital as a precaution to assess injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening.

A male suspect is contained within a building in the area.
