Canada Day R.I.D.E. Initiative in Niagara – 4 Arrests Made
On Wednesday July 1, 2026, officers with the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) conducted R.I.D.E. spot checks in the cities of Port Colborne, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls.
Throughout the night, officers stopped over 350 vehicles and inquired if any of the drivers had consumed any alcohol or drugs earlier in the evening. In total, 38 drivers were required to provide a sample of their breath for analysis. As a result, 3 drivers were arrested at the scene for providing breath samples over the legal limit.
One male from North York was charged with Driving While under suspension and Impaired Operation Exceed Blood Alcohol Concentration. In separate stops, a Fort Erie male and a Niagara Falls male were both charged separately with Impaired Operation Exceed Blood Alcohol Concentration. Drivers were issued a 90-Day License suspension in addition to a 7-day motor vehicle impound.
While conducting RIDE checks, officers formed grounds and arrested a 46-year-old male passenger from Toronto for Obstruct Peace Officer and two separate counts of Failing to Comply with his Release Order. The male was charged accordingly.
Police also issued 18 Provincial Offence Notices (tickets) to drivers for various traffic related offences. Charges included;
- Driving While Under Suspension
- Driving Motor Vehicle with Open Container of Liquor
- Drive While Passenger Under 16 Fails to Properly Wear Seat Belt
- Driver Operate Vehicle with More Passengers Than Seating Capacity
The Niagara Regional Police Service remains committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like R.I.D.E.
