Next Generation 9-1-1 is now live

The Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS), along with Niagara Parks Police and St. Catharines Fire Services, with the support of the Niagara Region, has successfully deployed Next Generation 9-1-1.

This multi-stage transformative upgrade to our call centre technology and operations is a significant accomplishment for the NRPS. This achievement was made possible by the tireless efforts of all team members in Communications, IT, and across the NRPS, who have worked diligently to reach this milestone.

Now, an automatic callback feature is in operation for all calls into 9-1-1 from a wireless device or landline when the call is disconnected before connecting with a call-taker. The new technology will recognize when a call is dropped, remove it from the 9-1-1 queue, and place a callback to confirm if someone is having an emergency.

The NRPS communications centre handles nearly 473,000 calls annually. With the implementation of Next Generation 9-1-1, all aspects of public safety communications will be significantly enhanced, enabling call-takers to work more efficiently and serve the public better.

This modernization will ensure faster, safer, and more informed emergency responses, marking a significant step forward for the Service.
