Driver Charged After Fatal Collision Involving Cyclist in Niagara-on-the-Lake
On Friday, June 26, 2026, at approximately 11:40pm, 2 District (Niagara Falls/Niagara-on-the-Lake) uniform officers responded to reports of a cyclist who was believed to have been struck by a vehicle.
Officers attended the area of Concession Road 6 near Line 4 Road in Niagara-on-the-Lake and confirmed that the cyclist had sustained fatal injuries.
The involved vehicle and driver had fled the scene prior to emergency services arriving and did not report the collision.
Further investigation by uniform officers along with officers from the Traffic Enforcement Unit led to another location in Niagara-on-the-Lake, where the suspected vehicle and driver were located. The driver was arrested, and the involved vehicle was seized for further examination.
As a result of the investigation, 22-year-old Gavin Devries from Niagara-on-the-Lake has been charged with:
- Failure to Stop After Accident Resulting in Death, contrary to section 320.16(3) of the Criminal Code
- Impaired Operation Causing Death, contrary to section 320.14(3) of the Criminal Code
The investigation remains ongoing and is being led by the Niagara Regional Police Service Collision Reconstruction Unit, with assistance from the Forensic Services Unit.
