Did you know, you have rights for your tow?

Towing Rights and Responsibilities

Did you know, when you need a tow, tow operators are to follow certain laws and regulations.

Their compliance to these laws and regulations not only protect you as a customer but also help keep the roads safe.

Our officers are receiving the latest up-to-date training and will be out enforcing the laws and regulations pertaining to the tow industry.

Unauthorized tow companies look to take advantage of unsuspecting customers and jeopardize the safety of the motoring public.

Your consent is required to tow your vehicle.

You have the right to:

  • Choose which company will tow your vehicle (except in restricted tow zones)
  • Choose where your vehicle will be towed.

Unless initiated by the police or authorized official (for example, if you are parked illegally)

Tow truck drivers and tow companies must do the following before moving your vehicle:

  • Give you their rates (their maximum rate schedule)
  • Give you a list of your rights as a customer
  • Get your consent to tow your vehicle
  • Give you a copy of the Consent Document that contains all information required from them by law

Be aware of high-pressure tactics.  Make sure you give your consent and receive a consent document.

A Consent Document includes:

  • The name of the tow operator
  • The tow driver’s certification number
  • The destination you chose

Never sign a blank document.

If there is ever a dispute or you feel that the tow company is unauthorized, please call police.
