On Saturday July 9, 2022, at approximately 8:00am, 8 District uniform officers were called to area of the North Service Road near Olive Street in the Town of Grimsby in response to a single motor vehicle that left the roadway, collided into a tree and caught fire.

Prior to emergency responders arriving on scene, good Samaritans removed the injured occupants from the vehicle and extinguished the small engine compartment fire.  

The occupants, an adult male and female, sustained serious but non life-threatening injuries.  They were transported to an out of town hospital for medical treatment.

The actions of the good Samaritans likely prevented life-threatening injuries, and their actions are commended.

8 District detectives have assumed carriage of the investigation. After having been granted judicial authorization to search the involved vehicle, detectives, with the assistance of the Forensic Services Unit, have recovered physical and forensic evidence.

25 year old Maxwell James McKay of Brantford has been arrested and charged with the following offences related to the collision:

Impaired Operation of a Conveyance Cause Bodily Harm CC

Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance Cause Bodily Harm CC

Take Motor Vehicle Without Consent CC

Possession of a Prohibited Weapon CC  

Possession of a Schedule One Substance (Cocaine) CDSA

McKay has been released from custody with a court date scheduled in St. Catharines.

Detectives are appealing to members of the public who may have been in the area of the North Service Road and Olive Street, in the Town of Grimsby on July 9th, 2022, between 7:45 am and 8:00 am.  Residents in the area with CCTV recording capabilities and motorists with an operational dash camera are encouraged to review their footage and contact the lead detective at 905-688-4111, option #3, extension #1009023.
