About the Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI) Program

The Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI) Program is offered by the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS), in partnership with the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, as part of the NRPS’s ongoing strategy to address the growing needs of youth in our community. This eight (8) week paid summer employment opportunity is offered to youth between the ages of 16 and 18 years of age from priority populations reflective of the cultural diversity of the Niagara Region.

 

The YIPI Program will run from July 2 to August 29, 2024.

 

Goals

  • To provide a safe, fun, and educational paid summer employment opportunity for youth who are reflective of the cultural diversity of the Niagara Region.
  • To enhance connections between the Niagara Regional Police and the communities we serve by developing positive working relationships with youth in our community.
  • To promote youth participation in, and exposure to, the work environment through educational and productive work assignments with the police service.
  • To offer youth from our community a unique personal growth opportunity.
  • To promote policing as a career and the Niagara Regional Police Service as an employer of choice.

 

What to Expect

  • A unique opportunity to see various positions and roles within the Niagara Regional Police Service.
  • The opportunity to engage in challenging and rewarding activities throughout the program that will help participants develop confidence and leadership.
  • The change to experience and engage with various community agencies, events, programs, and camps throughout the program.

 

Workdays

  • Workdays begin at 8:00 am and conclude at 4:00 pm Monday through Thursday. To accommodate some activities throughout the program work hours and days may need to be adjusted and participants will be notified in advance.
  • YIPI participants may be required to report to either the Safety Village located at 100 Niagara College Blvd in the City of Welland or Niagara Regional Police Welland Station located at 5 Lincoln St in the City of Welland.
  • YIPI participants are responsible for transportation at the beginning and end of their workday.
  • Use of personal cellphones or other electronic devices is not permitted during work hours. Participants may use their devices during scheduled breaks.
  • Participants will receive compensation at a wage of $16.55 per hour.
