Minimum Qualifications - Constable

The Police Services Act of Ontario sets out the following as the minimum qualifications to become a Police Constable in the Province of Ontario:

  1. Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
  2. Be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  3. Be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of the position, having regard to his or her own safety and the safety of the public.
  4. Be of good moral character and habits.
  5. Has successfully completed at least four (4) years of secondary school education or its equivalent.
  6. Possess a valid driver's licence with no more than six accumulated demerit points, permitting you to drive an automobile in Ontario with full driving privileges.
  7. Possess a valid first aid certificate and CPR certificate.  Must be from an approved First Aid/CPR provider.
  8. Must have no criminal convictions for which a pardon has not been granted.
  9. Must successfully complete the Pre-Application Assessment for Police Constable conducted through the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (www.oacpcertificate.ca).
