Effective Monday June 22, 2020 the Records office at Headquarters will be open to the Public by APPOINTMENT ONLY. An Appointment can be made to attend the Records Counter from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday. You are encouraged to  use the online application process for Record Checks and other processes where able however, if you need to attend the station you are asked to call 905-688-4111 x 4400 to book an appointment.

How do I apply?

You can apply on line using two pieces of government issued identification (one with a photo) through this website.

Navigate to the Police Background Check application form in blue below and click on the link to get started. 

Provide any other names used (maiden name, legal name change, etc.) that you may use in the appropriate box.

Provide proof of a permanent address within the Niagara Region.

All police record checks are processed on a first come, first served basis.  The turnaround time is two weeks for all application types.

We are processing all Records checks on-line only at this time.  If you experience a failed authentication notice while processing your request on -line  someone from the Records Office will contact you within 24 hours to continue processing your request.

Niagara Regional Police offers three types of police record checks:

  • Police Criminal Record Check (PCRC)
  • Police Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (PCRJMC)
  • Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)

Applicants Under the Age of 18 Years

The Police Record Checks Reform Act 2015, came into force November 1, 2018 and established clear and consistent rules to govern police record checks in the province to protect public safety and strengthen individual civil liberties by removing unnecessary barriers to employment, education and volunteer opportunities.

It prevents the disclosure of unnecessary information and standardizes the process by clearly defining three types of police record checks:

  1. Criminal Record Checks
  2. Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check
  3. Vulnerable Sector Checks

Most organizations are not legally obligated to request police record checks when screening individuals.  If a record check is necessary for a position, it should only be done as the last step in the hiring process – after the standard screening tools have identified an individual as a suitable candidate for an employment or volunteer opportunity.

What other screening tools can an organization use?

  • Resumé 
  • Personal reference checks
  • Interviews
  • Orientation sessions
  • Job shadowing
  • Follow up reviews
  • Feedback from clients

Other assessments as appropriate (e.g., some professions, such as policing and aviation, require medical examinations to assess physical and mental health).

Youth applicants or volunteers under the age of 18

As of November 1, 2018, community organizations, charities and sport groups will no longer be entitled to use police checks as a screening tool when considering youth for employment or volunteer work.

In accordance with Ontario's Police Record Checks Reform Act and the Youth Criminal Justice Act, police services can only provide Record Checks to applicants who are under the age of 18 and applying for positions with municipal, provincial or federal governments.

As a result, police are not permitted to provide record checks for youths seeking a position with non-government organizations, such as sports groups, not-for-profit agencies, charities, hospitals and school boards.

This communication is intended to educate non-government organizations about changes to Police Record Checks pertaining to youth under the age of 18.

Fingerprinting

Niagara Regional Police currently provides fingerprint services for Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) applicants who have received notification from our Service that the extra fingerprint step is required. We also currently provide fingerprint services for Adoption applicants who submit their police record check applications to our Service.

Appointments may be made by calling 905-688-4111 ext. 4400.                                                               Fingerprints are done at 5700 Valley Way, Niagara Falls.

A local company is available to provide fingerprint services for applicants who have been asked to submit fingerprints to the RCMP for the following types of applications:

  • Immigration
  • Citizenship
  • Permanent Residency
  • Record Suspensions (Pardons)
  • Work Permits
  • Employment
  • Controlled Goods
  • Adoption
  • Waivers
  • All other non-criminal purposes
