In recognition of efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19, effective March 18th members of the public will be directed to apply online to request Record Checks, Fingerprint Destruction, Record Suspensions, Occurrence reports, and FOI until further notice.

This morning, the Government of Ontario announced that it is declaring an emergency under s 7.0.1 (1) of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act.

While the declaration has wide reaching effects and will no doubt assist in containing the spread of the COVID-19 virus, I wanted to assure our community that this declaration does not mean a change to our police operations.

Detectives investigating St. Catharines shooting

At approximately 12:50am on Sunday, March 15, 2020, 1 District (St. Catharines) uniform officers were called to the area of Niagara Street and Church Street in the City of St. Catharines for reports of gun shots.

When they arrived they located an 18 year old male victim.  He was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries which were minor.

St. Catharines male arrested following graffiti investigation

Since January 2020, officers with the 1 District (St. Catharines) Detective Office have been investigating numerous similar graffiti tags that have been appearing around the City of St. Catharines. 

Detectives identified 73 locations where the tag "GAFI" appeared. The "tags" have been located on citizen's private property, City of St. Catharines property and public utility property.

The offences are believed to have occurred between October of 2018 and January of 2020.
