April 24 – Sexual Assault Social Media Trend

The Niagara Regional Police Service has been contacted by a number of concerned members of the public regarding a social media trend that is circulating on the internet.

The trend wrongly states that April 24, 2021 is a date where sexual assault is legal for a day. There is no such thing as a free day for criminal offences.

Sexual violence is never acceptable as a joke or punch line. 

What is sexual violence?

Sexual violence can include:

  • sexual abuse, sexual assault, rape, incest, childhood...

Male Arrested in Relation to Weapons Call in Fort Erie

On April 20, 2021 5 District (Fort Erie) uniform officers were called to a motel in the area of Garrison Road and Central Avenue in Fort Erie for a report of a male armed with a gun.

Uniform officers, the Emergency Task Unit, K9, detectives, and negotiators with the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS), all attended the scene.

The male suspect was situated in a unit, which was contained by the NRPS. As a result, the suspect was arrested.

On April 16, 2021, 1 District St. Catharines uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service responded to a report of a suspicious person in Thorold.

Update 2 – April 20, 2021

As a result of the ongoing investigation by 1 District detectives, the suspect in this matter has been identified as a male youth.  Detectives are seeking an arrest warrant for the youth. 

The Youth Criminal Justice Act of Canada prohibits the Niagara Regional Police Service from identifying the male.

The detectives would like to thank the public and media for their assistance in efforts to identify the suspect.

On April 20, 2021, detectives arrested Kia Pagan-Sandino (19 years old), of Fort Erie.

Pagen-Sandino was arrested and charged with the following offences of:

  • Aggravated Assault
  • Assault
  • Pointing a Firearm
  • Discharge a Firearm
  • Unauthorized possession of a Firearm
  • Careless use of a Firearm
  • Possession of a Firearm contrary to Prohibition Order
  • Fail to comply with Release Order and Fail to comply with Probation order
