The Firearms Unit consists of two officers and one civilian member who are available to answer any questions dealing with firearms, licences, registrations, or procedures under the Firearms Act and related regulations.

Mandate

In addition to providing public education through presentations and literature, the Firearms Unit investigates concerns about individuals, businesses, clubs, and ranges. They are also responsible for processing, reporting, and storing seized firearms and related property.

INDIVIDUALS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE A VALID FIREARMS LICENCE

IN ORDER TO POSSESS A FIREARM IN CANADA.

There are several types of firearms licences available:

  • Possession Only Licence (POL)
  • Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL)
  • Minors’ Licence (POL only – cannot purchase firearms)
  • Non-Resident Customs Declaration
  • Non-Resident Borrowing Licence

Applications for firearms licences and applications to register a firearm are available from the Canadian Firearms Centre, by calling 1-800-731-4000 or by going to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Canadian Firearms Program website.
